Christian Halloween Alternatives For Families

I don’t know about you, but Autumn is my favorite season and time of year. From delicious crisp apples to sweater weather, and pumpkin spice everything, I love it all! The one thing that I despise, however, is Halloween.

If you know anything about the origin of Halloween, you’ll know that it began as a pagan tradition. The goons, goblins, and other hellish imagery that Halloween brings are straight up, 100%, occultic. In other words, it’s evil y’all and as Christians, we have no business mixing Light with darkness. 2 Corinthians 6:13-18 makes it very clear that as children of God, we are God’s temple and we should keep ourselves separate from such things.

I am under the personal conviction that celebrating Halloween does not edify my family in a godly way and it does glorify or please God. Therefore, we do not celebrate Halloween. So what’s a Christian family to do when Halloween comes around? If you’re looking for Christian Halloween alternatives, you’ve come to the right place to get ideas for your family this Fall.

Explaining to your children why celebrating Halloween is not permissible may be difficult. It may be hard for some children to understand why. I mean, what child doesn’t want to get dressed up and go out and get loads of free candy? That’s why I believe it’s important not to sugarcoat it (pun intended). Children should learn why at a young age and not be sheltered.

Christians can still have fun during the Fall, right? Umm…yes! These Fall activities are great Halloween alternatives for Christian families to enjoy.

Decorate For Fall

Ahh…I love the coziness Fall brings as well. I love decorating my home with the warm colors of Fall decor. It’s also a great opportunity to get some Fall crafts going with the children. Here’s a lovely Fall wreath my daughter made.

Reformation Day Party

Reformation Day just so happens to fall on October 31st. You may be familiar with Martin Luther and how he nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg church door. The Reformation is a testament to God’s sovereignty and providence and learning this history is important to any Christian education. This incredible list of books about the Reformation includes books for toddlers through to adults!

Decorate Pumpkins

Decorating pumpkins is always fun to do with the kids! We’re not much for carving them, but we sure do love to get out a bunch of paint and stickers for the kids to decorate their own pumpkins. Afterward, they become part of our Fall decor!

Give Goodie Bags

In lieu of going trick or treating, give your children a goodie bag filled with sweet treats and a few small toys. It’s similar to giving Easter baskets!

Go To A Harvest Festival

You can’t have a list of Christian Halloween alternatives and not include Harvest festivals! They are usually hosted by a church and it’s a great place for the kids to dress up, play games, and grab candy. Some churches may call their Harvest festival “trunk or treat” where people decorate the trunks of their cars and hand out candy.

Love these ideas. We always get looked at funny and asked a million questions on why we do not “allow our children to have fun” and it isn’t a bad “holiday”. Now we can do our own thing and have new ways to “do” the day our own way.
